Deploying A Database

Sometimes users trying to set up a network database will not be able to directly access a data server either because physical access is not allowed, or the server does not allow direct access (like Novell Servers), or the server is one of the new station-less servers. In any of these cases you will need to ‘deploy’ your database from a station to the server for upgrades before you grade every computer. This is a process for an experienced computer tech, but can be done with your Lien Program®.

First Time Installation:

If you are installing Lien Writer® for the first time, simply install the program on one of the workstations (you will need licenses for multiple stations), then, having access to a server location, go to the Deploy A Database option of the SETUP selection of the Lien Program® Main Menu. You must be the only Lien Program® user on the entire system.

Choose the location to where your database will be deployed, and press Select. The database will set itself up on the correct location.

Once the station is installed, choose “Setup” from the Main Menu, then “Lien Program® Defaults”, then page 8 of Lien Program® Defaults, and note the network path for the server data files. Enter the same for every station that will be running a Lien Program®.

Subsequent Installations:

If you need to upgrade a previously Deployed database, again you must be the only Lien Program® user on the entire system. From a workstation, select “Setup” from the Main Menu, then “Lien Program® Defaults”, then page 8 of Lien Program® Defaults, and remove the network path for the server data files after you have written down the path. This will disconnect you from the server database, which will have to be upgraded.

Using the Windows Explorer or my computer, find the old server directory for the Lien Program®. Rename the old directory to some name you will remember. We will need the data from it later.

Install the program upgrade on your workstation (you will need licenses for multiple stations). Then, having access to a server location, go to the Deploy A Database option of the SETUP selection of the Lien Program® Main Menu.

Using the old path name that was renamed (so other stations on your system will not have to be changed) choose the location to where your database will be deployed, and press Select. The database will set itself up on the correct location.

Select “Setup” from the Main Menu, then “Lien Program® Defaults”, then page 9 of Lien Program® Defaults, and check the network path for the server data files. You will already be connected from the server database, which will have to have its data restored. To obtain your old data for your Single Station or Server, select “Setup” from the Main Menu, then “Update Data from Previous Version”, agree that you want to upgrade. You will be presented with a path selection screen. Choose the drive and subdirectory of the directory with the old data you renamed, then press “Select”. Say “Yes” to every question. Your old data will now be available restored. verfiy this by pressing the ‘Locate” button on the program “Current Job” screen.

You can now upgrade every other Lien Program® station in the network without having to do anything but install the new program.
